In Thailand, more than 25% of adults have high blood pressure, which can be caused by eating too much salt. Sodium consumption in the country is almost double the WHO-recommended level of less than 2g per day, and an estimated 17,000 people die each year from too much salt. Industry and government action is urgent.
Our partners in Thailand, including the Thai Low Salt Network, Kidney Friend Association of Thailand and others recently conducted a press conference to build public awareness of the harms of consuming too much salt and to share evidence-based recommendations to reduce high sodium content in packaged food through policy action, including:
- A salt tax for specific categories of food
- Restrictions on marketing to children and front-of-pack-warning labels for a narrow set of packaged foods
- Mandatory limits on salt content
