A global leader in nutrition policy, Mexico’s National Institute of Public Health (INSP) hosted knowledge exchange online workshops for government officials and civil society groups in Cameroon, Nigeria, and Ethiopia—one per country—with support from the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) and Resolve to Save Lives.
Hosted by INSP’s ‘Global Hub for Health and Food Policy Innovations’, the workshops highlighted lessons from Mexico’s food policy successes, including front-of-package warning labels (FOPWL), restrictions on food marketing, healthier school meals, and taxes on sugary drinks and junk food.
Each session was tailored to the participating country’s context and priorities: overcoming policy passage challenges for FOPWL in Cameroon, building the nutrient profile model that will underpin packaged food policies in Nigeria, and lessons on implementation and enforcement for upcoming packaged food policies in Ethiopia.
Cross-country, peer knowledge exchange is essential to build better policies. Though local contexts vary, the elements of a successful policy—and the strategies for getting past common obstacles—often carry across borders.
INSP and GHAI plan to run similar workshops with other countries in the coming months to continue advancing global efforts to create healthier food environments.
