Strengthening One Health surveillance with SITAware in Nigeria

Participants at the SITAware workshop, organized by RTSL and NCDC, to strengthen multisectoral coordination for One Health surveillance and public health event reporting in Nigeria.

Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL) and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) have partnered to strengthen One Health surveillance in Nigeria, organizing a capacity-building workshop to introduce key federal stakeholders to SITAware — Nigeria’s national event management platform for tracking reported public health events and documenting response actions at both national and subnational levels.

Now operational across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, SITAware supports improved coordination and documentation of public health events as part of NCDC’s broader mandate to detect, prevent, and respond to public health threats nationwide.

The workshop brought together participants from the Federal Ministry of Livestock, Federal Ministry of Environment, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, and the Office of the National Security Adviser. Sessions covered SITAware’s key features, use cases, and outputs, while creating opportunity for discussions on its potential to strengthen collaborative surveillance across sectors.

Participants also examined how SITAware can be integrated with the National Animal Disease Information System (NADIS), Integrated National Health and Environmental Surveillance System (INHESS), and other sector-specific systems, and explored ways to improve event management coordination between the national Public Health Emergency Operations Centre and relevant MDAs.

The workshop is expected to result in improved capacity among One Health stakeholders to use SITAware effectively, the establishment of a functional national workstream for reporting and coordinating One Health events, and a deeper understanding of SITAware’s role in strengthening notification and coordination of outbreak response.

Next steps include formalizing stakeholder agreements on the routine use of SITAware for One Health event reporting and ensuring sustained implementation monitoring. Longer-term priorities include strengthening governance for data sharing, developing clear workflows and standard operating procedures for integration with NADIS, INHESS, and other platforms, clarifying roles and responsibilities across MDAs.
