Dr. Cherian Varghese has been the Professor and Head of Prasanna School of Public Health, MAHE Manipal since June 2024.
Dr. Varghese has worked at all levels of the World Health Organization since 2001 (WHO India office, Western Pacific Regional Office). He worked in WHO, Geneva as coordinator for NCD management between 2015 and 2024. He led the development of multiple WHO products including the WHO HEARTS package, updating WHO PEN, Non-Communication Diseases ‘Best buys’, and the guidelines for cancer pain management. He also was the cross-cutting lead for special initiatives including cervical cancer elimination. He has more than 100 publications in the field of NCDs and health systems and an h index of 43.
Dr. Varghese is a recipient of the Norman Campbell Excellence Award in Population Hypertension Prevention and Control, WHO South-East Asia Region Award for Excellence and fellowships from UICC and IARC.
Dr. Varghese has postgraduate medical qualifications in radiation oncology and health management from India. He holds an M Phil. from the University of Cambridge, UK, and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the University of Tampere, Finland. He is a member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) in Clinical Epidemiology.
