Primary health care facilities can provide consistent, high quality blood pressure management—when health workers are trained to follow a simple, standardized treatment protocol and use digital tools to support patient follow up.The Resolve to Save Lives India team partnered with Jhpiego and the Madya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh State Governments, on two trainings designed to support blood pressure and diabetes management at the primary care level.
In the one training—a state-level training of trainers – 151 master trainers from 55 districts in Madya Pradesh did a deep dive into on treatment protocols for hypertension and diabetes, statin uses for cardiovascular risk reduction and using digital tools to improve patient follow-up. These trainers will now support training for primary care and front-line health workers across nearly 11,000 primary health care facilities in the state.
The team also conducted trainings for 400 Community Health Officers in Uttar Pradesh, because Community Health Officers are the first point of contact for people living with hypertension or diabetes, the training focused on quality opportunistic screening for hypertension, using standardized treatment protocols, using digital platforms for patient tracking, ensuring availability of adequate medicines, and proper record-keeping and reporting to improve the quality and continuity of care.
The trainings form a part of RTSL India’s work to support the frontline health workers better detect, treat, and manage hypertension and diabetes at the primary health care level. The programme covers 37 districts across Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, reaching more than 12,000 primary health care facilities and their staff. Aligned with the Government of India’s NP-NCD programme under Ayushman Bharat–Health and Wellness Centres, this initiative is expected to benefit nearly 9 million people with hypertension and 5 million people with diabetes.
