In a study published in Emerging Infectious Diseases, Resolve to Save Lives and colleagues explore the role of event management systems (EMS) in epidemic intelligence, focusing on the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention’s (NCDC) SITAware software. EMS are essential for integrating surveillance signals and managing incident response, though international standards for their development remain underdefined. SITAware, designed to function effectively even with limited internet bandwidth, provides capabilities for generating notifications, reports, spatiotemporal dashboards and event-level data to support real-time accountability and post-event learning. In 2022, it successfully managed approximately 300 incidents and was implemented at subnational levels by NCDC. The insights from NCDC’s experience with SITAware offer valuable guidance for the development and implementation of EMS in similar settings.
