Methods

Data were obtained from the Food Labeling of Italian Products database, which was developed by collecting information from nutrition labels on cereal-based products from the 13 major retailers in Italy a with websites: Auchan, Bennet, Carrefour, Conad, Coop Italia, Crai, Despar, Esselunga, Il Gigante, Iper, Pam Panorama, Selex and Sidis. Company name, brand name, descriptive name, presence or absence of nutrition claims, health claims, and salt content were collected for each item present in the database.

Products were grouped into nine categories and 30 subcategories for which median and interquartile range of sodium content (mg per 100 g of product) were calculated.
