Vital Strategies and Resolve to Save Lives Announce Plans for the Initiative to Become an Independent Nonprofit Organization

(March 3, 2021, NY, USA) – Vital Strategies, a global health organization and home to the Resolve to Save Lives (Resolve) initiative, announced today that after four years of rapid expansion, Resolve will become a fully independent, U.S.-based and registered nonprofit organization, effective by June 2022.

Vital Strategies has incubated Resolve, an initiative led by Dr. Tom Frieden, former director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and former commissioner of the New York City Health Department, since Resolve launched in 2017. Vital Strategies’ operational structure, expertise and global network served as a launchpad to help Resolve rapidly scale up and then expand even more to support the global and U.S. response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, Resolve will move into a new phase as an independent organization focused on epidemic preparedness and response and reducing deaths from cardiovascular disease. Vital Strategies and Resolve will continue to partner on key issues.

José Luis Castro, President and CEO, Vital Strategies, said, “The need for strong public health systems is clearer than ever and Vital Strategies and Resolve are committed to tackling the globe’s leading health challenges. In addition to incubating Resolve, Vital Strategies covers programs aimed at preventing noncommunicable diseases and injuries in the domains of environmental health, food and alcohol policy, urban health, road safety, data for health, tobacco control, sexual and reproductive health, tuberculosis research and overdose prevention. We look forward to working with partners on issues where we can accelerate impact and help prevent leading causes of death, disease and injury worldwide.”

“We are thankful to Vital Strategies for providing a great launchpad for our work,” said Dr. Tom Frieden, President and CEO, Resolve to Save Lives. “As we move into Resolve’s next phase, it’s clear in light of COVID that we need stronger public health systems to prevent the next epidemic and save more lives from heart attacks and stroke. I am excited to move forward, building on the foundation laid with Vital Strategies’ support.”
