Research prioritization to scale-up lower-sodium salts

Resolve to Save Lives, The George Institute, Johns Hopkins University

Excess sodium drives global hypertension and cardiovascular deaths, yet adoption of low-sodium salt substitutes (LSSS) remains slow despite strong evidence that they could prevent hundreds of thousands of deaths annually. To pinpoint what’s holding uptake back, Johns Hopkins University, The George Institute, and Resolve to Save Lives convened international experts to identify the most urgent research gaps. Their consensus agenda highlights four priorities: assessing LSSS safety for people with conditions like CKD, diabetes, or those on RAAS inhibitors; improving product formulation, acceptability, and supply feasibility; testing implementation strategies that build trust and encourage adoption; and evaluating policy tools such as subsidies, tariffs, and public procurement. Coordinated research and investment across sectors will be crucial to unlock LSSS’s global potential to prevent millions of cardiovascular deaths.
