As part of efforts to strengthen data-driven epidemic intelligence and improve reporting efficiency in Nigeria, Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL) partnered with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) to host a workshop focused on enhancing two of Nigeria’s key public health surveillance products: the Weekly Epidemiological Report and the Lassa Fever Situation Report (SITREP).
Both the Weekly Epidemiological Report, still produced manually, and the Lassa Fever SITREP, which currently draws only from human health data, face challenges with timeliness and data quality. To address these gaps, the workshop built on outcomes from the Collaborative Surveillance Project inception meeting in January 2025, where stakeholders had identified the need to automate the Weekly Epidemiological Report and prototype an enhanced One Health Lassa Fever SITREP that integrates data from human, animal, and environmental health sectors.
Stakeholders from the NCDC, key ministries and agencies, and partner organizations worked together to develop strategies to improve the timeliness of the Weekly Epidemiological Report, update the One Health Lassa Fever SITREP to reflect currently available data, and create an inventory of digital data systems relevant to these information products.
By the close of the workshop, participants had developed prototypes for both tools and agreed on practical next steps to refine and sustain them. Planned actions include automating the WER and the One Health Lassa Fever SITREP, which is expected to reduce human error, improve production timelines, and build trust in the content of these information products for better public health decision-making in Nigeria.
