In Nigeria, a major barrier to blood pressure control is the high cost of medication. Many patients are forced to pay out of pocket, making medicines unaffordable and long-term treatment unsustainable.
Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL) recently partnered with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Presidential Initiative on Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC), and others to build local capacity to produce affordable, high-quality cardiovascular medicines that meet global standards.
The training brought together local manufacturers, regulators, and technical experts to strengthen compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), deepen understanding of cardiovascular disease treatment protocols, and support sustainable production of quality-assured medicines in Nigeria.
Dr. Kufor Osi, RTSL Nigeria’s Senior Technical Advisor, Hypertension Control, emphasized the importance of the initiative: “Medicine access is still a huge challenge. Many of these medicines are expensive, and concerns remain around the quality of some of the products available in the market. That’s why this training is so important. We are working to ensure that cardiovascular drugs produced in Nigeria are not only available, but of the highest quality.”
By the end of the training, participants had strengthened their understanding of GMP standards, gained practical skills to establish strong quality control and quality management systems, and learned strategies to improve the local production of safe, effective cardiovascular medicines.
