During a high-level virtual event, “Towards Zero Tolerance: Eliminating Trans Fats from the Edible Oil Industry,” Access to Nutrition Initiative (ATNi), in partnership with Resolve to Save Lives, launched the Edible Oil Supplier Index Report—new researxh that looks at the systems that edible oil suppliers have in place to eliminate harmful industrially-produced trans fatty acids (iTFA) and partially hydrogenated oils from their food products.
iTFAs significantly increase one’s risk for developing cardiovascular disease, and their elimination from the food supply is regulated in more than 60 markets globally. Yet iTFA and partially hydrogenated oils remain present in commodity supply chains many foods produced around the world.
During the webinar, ATNi and RTSL unpack a 2023 study commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO) that found that 53% of products from 12 of the largest global food and beverage companies contained iTFA, with 5% of products containing levels of TFA exceeding WHO guidelines.
