High blood pressure is the leading cause of preventable death in Australia, and a clinician group is taking action to help get it under control.
The National Hypertension Taskforce (NHT) of Australia recently released a statement supporting potassium-enriched, low-sodium salt substitutes as an effective, affordable way to help lower blood pressure and reduce cardiovascular risk. Worldwide, most people consume twice the recommended amount of table salt per day, putting them at increased risk for heart attack, stroke, and early death. Replacing regular salt 1:1 with potassium-enriched, lower-sodium salts is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce cardiovascular risk, and aligns with WHO guidance and with RTSL’s goal to reduce global salt intake by 30% by 2050.
RTSL works globally to advance healthier food policies like this—because heart disease is preventable, and practical solutions already exist. When clinicians like the Australian NHT endorse low-sodium salt, governments are encouraged to promote this evidence-based, scalable solution and bring a healthier salt option to everyone’s table.
