Packaged Food Sampling

Methods

Data for packaged food was collected from two major supermarkets, VinMart and Lotte Mart, in Hanoi, Vietnam using the FoodSwitch program. FoodSwitch technology was used to capture images of the barcode, front of package, nutrition information panel, ingredients list, brand name, product name, package size, number of servings per package and serving size. This information was collected by systematically scanning supermarket products, with support from a local Vietnamese researcher. Data from the photographs were entered into the FoodSwitch Content Management System. Foods and beverages were sorted using the categorization system established by the Global Food Monitoring Group.

Packaged food and beverage products were categorized into twelve categories for which mean, standard deviation, median, interquartile range, minimum and maximum values of sodium content (mg/100g of product) were calculated. This data was purchased by Resolve to Save Lives from The George Institute of Public Health.
