Statement from Dr. Tom Frieden on WHO’s new, lifesaving hypertension guideline:

“The guideline details best practices in hypertension care and endorses simple, practical, proven strategies that can be easily tailored to an individual country’s context to improve blood pressure control. Hypertension remains the world’s leading killer and is a major cause of cardiovascular disease, which takes over 18 million lives every year. Among its recommendations, the new guideline highlights shifting routine hypertension care tasks to nurses and other health workers, freeing up physicians to focus on managing complex cases and increasing the health care system’s ability to manage more patients with high blood pressure. Resolve to Save Lives’ Six-step guide expands on these recommendations and offers practical guidance on implementing a hypertension treatment program.

“We must develop, improve and implement hypertension programs based on the best available information. This new guideline is an important step to improve hypertension care to save more lives—this is the one goal we should all be focused on.”
