New data on trans fat content in Indonesia’s food supply show that nearly 10 percent of foods tested exceed the WHO-recommended safety threshold, some food groups by as much as 25 percent. Trans fat increases risk of heart attack and stroke, but can be easily replaced with healthier oils without changing taste or recipes. In a new article published in the Jakarta Post, Dr. Renu Garg and N. Paranietharan discuss the importance of protecting people from this harmful toxin, particularly in Indonesia which is the world’s fourth-most populous country and risks becoming a dumping ground for trans fat-rich food products banned by other countries in the region.
